I’m Eating Smarter with Fooducate App

I found a new app for my Android that I just love! I shared it with everyone in the National List office, and they love it, too! It’s called Fooducate, and it’s Free.  If you haven’t tried it, you might want to check it out. With this app, instead of trying to decode nutrition labels and ingredient lists, you scan the bar code on a food product with the phone camera, and based on nutritional value, the app grades whatever it is.  Along with the grade, it gives highlights, both good and bad, as to why the product received the grade it did. For example the, product might contain too much salt and thus receive a poor grade. It then provides you with a list of healthier alternatives. I use it every time I shop now!

Additional Information

The Details page also shows the calories per serving, % of people who like it, FoodPoints values, warnings, and other details the manufacturer may or may not want you to know (e.g., extensive processing). The various warnings displayed for some foods include excessive sugar, trans fats, controversial food colorings, and confusing serving sizes. The alternatives tab displays related items that earn a better grade than the product you’ve scanned. A helpful feature is that you can instantly see the reasons why another item is better, like having healthier ingredients and more nutrients. The app has information on over 200,000 products, and they say the number is growing daily. It requires the Android OS version 2.2 or higher, touch screen and camera. It is also available for iPhone.

We’d like to hear about your experience with Fooducate or one of your favorite apps! Please enter a comment.

  1. I just downloaded Fooducate for my iphone over the weekend, and found it to be extraordinary in its scope and really fun to use. As a person with sensitivity to MSG, I was excited by the app’s ability to read through ingredients used to hide the content of MSG and warn as to the mislabeling.

    Thanks for the recommendation Beverly!

  2. I was blown away by this app. It’s so easy and so beneficial! It’s as easy as taking a picture and submitting it with a click of a button. You’ll receive nutritional values, grading and better choices for that product within seconds. Besides “Angry Birds”, this has to be one of my favorite apps I’ve heard of!

Please check it out and give us your feedback, and let me know if anyone else has great apps that they’d like to share.

  3. Not only does it work on Android phones, it works with apple products as well. I would recommend this product to everyone out there because it gives you healthy options. If you feel like you are already eating healthy, try using this app. The items you are eating may just surprise you. And if the product you scan is not on there, it’s as easy as taking a few pictures to send it to the company for them to add. Enjoy!

  4. It’s awesome! I recommend checking it out and it’s perfect for grocery shopping.

  5. I love this App! Thanks for sharing it Beverly! I have it on my iPhone and it’s is a great way to get my 8yr old interested in healthy items at the grocery store. It’s a great tool to have to help with those healthy eating options.
