This is the second of our introductions to a National List Team Member. Because most of our interaction with members and clients is likely to take place on the phone, we think it will help you to feel more comfortable if you have a mental and visual image of us. Kacey Rask, NL Account Executive for 3.5 years, is our “Team Member of the Month.”
Kacey was born and raised just outside of Whitefish, MT. She attended grades K-12 at Columbia Falls High School, where she was an honors student, swam competitively, played basketball and volleyball and ran track and field. She told me, “Growing up in this area was like being on a vacation. We lived at the base of Big Mountain Ski Resort, hiked in Glacier on the weekends and fished in the many great lakes and streams that flow through this area. I couldn’t have been raised in a more beautiful setting.” Kacey accepted an athletic and academic scholarship to The University of Mary in Bismarck, where she studied business and management, and went on to get an MBA immediately after receiving her undergraduate degree. To all of that, she added student coaching with the U. of Mary track and field team.
She considers landing her job at The National List to be “a twist of fate.” After five years as a restaurant manager, she began searching for opportunities that would allow her to more fully capitalize on her business degree by using her client service, marketing and public relations skills. She saw the ad for a job with The National List of Attorneys and applied. It seemed like a perfect fit for her goals. The “twist of fate” came when she was contacted by NL VP, Randy Nicola, to set up an interview. “He said he already knew who I was! He’d been a longtime fan of my restaurant, and when he and his wife last dined there, I visited his table. He said I left a lasting impression on them, and he remembers saying to her, ‘I’d love to have someone like that work for me at NL.’”
At NL, she does, indeed, use her client service, marketing and public relations skills by doing all of the following:
- Assists in building and maintaining our attorney member network by prospecting contingency-fee collection attorneys. She solicits some referrals from clients who already know firms that are doing good work.
- Educates new industries about our “Attorney List” and other services by prospecting, conference attendance, and marketing campaigns.
- Services, builds and maintains our forwarder (client) base, by providing service assistance, attorney recommendations and industry educational support.
- Assists clients in taking advantage of our insurance program, which allows their clams to be insured for protection against attorney theft of funds
- Explains our compliance program to our forwarders so they will know that NL can assist in annually collecting important insurance documentation and compliance information on the law firms they employ. She also makes member firms aware that they can send the information to one source once a year, and NL will provide it to multiple forwarders, saving money and time.
In everything she does, Kacey works hard to put our clients first. She calls them frequently to touch base and ensure that the services we provide are benefiting them. She asks probing questions to find out if there are more added-value programs NL can bring to their legal outsourcing. She listens to their frustrations with their current systems to see if there’s a way that NL can make their processes more efficient. She proactively tracks clients who are insuring claims through NL to make sure they are doing it in the most efficient way possible.
Kacey adds, “Being from a small town in Montana, I had NO idea that this industry is as extensive as it is. I truly thought that when a collection agency asked a debtor to pay – debtors paid. I’m amazed at the lengths that creditors have to go through to collect on goods and services they provided and didn’t get paid for. I also feel there is a huge misperception about the debt collection industry. Collection agencies and law firms aren’t just trying to make a debtor pay. They are also trying very hard to provide the debtor with options for payment that fit their financial situation and won’t ruin their credit history.
When asked what she likes most about her job, Kacey said, “The National List isn’t just a ‘job.’ We are a family. It’s a great feeling to know that your colleagues, clients and attorney members are like extended family members. I also love that we provide support, industry knowledge and new business opportunities to our attorney members. We are ‘matchmakers” who listen to our clients and provide law firm member referrals that best match clients’ needs.”
Kacey says that the most challenging part of her job is helping clients to understand that, “We truly are a FREE service provider that supports their legal outsourcing. Our custom attorney referrals, detailed firm bios, Compliance Program, industry knowledge and customer support are all FREE. The challenge is to make prospective clients aware of all we do to support them at no charge.”
On a more personal note, Kacey has been married to her “best friend” for 6 years, and they are the very proud parents of a spunky three-year-old girl and a charismatic five-year-old boy. “When we’re not working, we spend every waking second that we have doing family activities indoors and out, and running between hockey games, swimming and dance lessons with them. We love fishing, camping, and playing outdoors with our kids. We also spend time with our amazing friends, and travel to see our extended family.”
Kacey says she likes living in North Dakota because it is safe place to raise children. “It gives you a great feeling to be where you can find yourself getting lost in conversation with the person filling their car up at the gas pump next to you. I also love the different seasons. I just wish winter didn’t stay around longer than all the rest of them!”
Kacey’s personal goals also revolve around family. Providing the best opportunities for her children, giving them the most loving home possible, traveling and spending more time with her husband and family top her list. ”Life is about living so you have no regrets. Professionally, I want to continue to build NL as the premier attorney referral service and dive into new markets that will provide more opportunity for our attorney members.”
