2016 NASP Conference “Climbs to New Heights”

nasp-2016I just returned from The Summit of Subrogation: Climbing to New Heights, the 18th Annual NASP Conference. It was aptly titled, because it took place in Colorado Springs, CO, at the famous Broadmoor Hotel, at the foot of the Cheyenne Mountains.

The Conference featured two full days of 60-minute sessions and 45-minute speed sessions that included individual tracks for subrogation related to Auto, Property, Product Liability, General, Management, Workers’ Compensation and Healthcare.

An interesting Auto Track session was “Driverless Cars and Damages: Subrogation in a New Era,” presented by The National List’s own attorney members, Jason Sullivan and Rebecca Wright of Rathbone Group, LLC. They warned that driverless cars may be here sooner than we think, noting that Tesla already has a model on the market. Driverless cars allow their owners to navigate through traffic with no hands on the wheel. They talked about how this new breed of car will affect our industry.

“Playing the Percentages: Study of Comparative Negligence” was another Auto Track session presented by an NL attorney member, Lee Mendelson, of Mendelson Goldman & Schwarz, APC (CA). Lee quickly grabbed the attention of his audience by including cameos from Lisa Lobe (yes the singer/artist), WWE’s Big Show, and his 4-year-old daughter. They all convinced us how easy it is to understand Comparative Negligence.

I also attended “Found Money – How to Increase Your Judgment,” presented by Investinet’s Howard Barnard and Sequoia Financials’ Roy du Plessis. They shared real-life examples of their organizations’ successes and failures in judgment enforcement and recoveries.

Two attorneys from another National List firm, Bodie Enger Law (CO); W. Bryant Bodie and Colin Enger led a session on “Maximizing Recovery through Criminal Restitution.”  We are proud to say that several other sessions were headed by NL attorney members and NL clients. If you couldn’t attend them, we encourage you to check out their sessions at www.subrogation.org.

Another successful and educational NASP Annual Conference is on the books! The next Annual Conference will be held November 5th, 2017, in Austin, Texas. Don’t miss it!
